Entry Requirements

Academic Requirements

  • Learners are expected to hold a recognised secondary school qualification or equivalent.

  • Mature applicants without formal qualifications may be considered on the basis of relevant work experience and their ability to meet the demands of the programme.

English Language Requirements

Learners must demonstrate English language proficiency sufficient to successfully engage with programme materials, participate in learning activities, and complete assessments. This may be evidenced through prior education completed in English or through a recognised English language qualification.

For learners whose first language is not English, an IELTS 5.5 (overall) or above  is normally accepted for entry to the diploma. Equivalent English language proficiency may include:

  • PTE Academic: 42

  • Duolingo English Test: 95

  • TOEFL iBT: 46

  • Provides an overview of Canada's social services landscape, the role of the community service worker, and the systems that support individuals and families.

  • Explores how to work respectfully and effectively across cultures, identities, and backgrounds in a diverse Canadian society.

  • Develops the active listening, questioning, and rapport-building skills needed to support clients effectively and respectfully.

  • Examines the ethical principles, confidentiality, and professional boundaries essential to safe and responsible helping relationships.

  • Teaches how to assess client needs, develop service plans, coordinate resources, and maintain accurate, professional case records.

  • Introduces common mental health conditions and substance-use issues, their impact, and supportive, recovery-oriented approaches to care.

  • Builds the skills to recognize, respond to, and safely de-escalate crisis situations while connecting people to appropriate support.

  • Looks at the specific needs of populations such as children, families, seniors, newcomers, and persons with disabilities, and how to support each effectively.

  • Develops skills in leading groups, building community capacity, and connecting people to collective supports and resources.

  • Introduces personal safety, self-care, and strategies for managing stress and preventing burnout in demanding helping roles.

  • Prepares students for the job market with résumé and cover-letter writing, interview practice, professional networking, and job-search strategies tailored to their field.
