Settlement Services

Program Description
This certificate introduces students to the settlement and integration needs of newcomers, immigrants, refugees, and international learners. Students explore cultural sensitivity, client communication, community referrals, documentation support, employment readiness, and barriers faced by newcomers in Canada.
The program is suitable for learners who want to support inclusive communities and help newcomers access services, information, and local resources. Graduates may pursue support roles in settlement agencies, nonprofit organizations, community centres, education providers, and employment service organizations.

Academic Requirements

Learners are expected to hold a recognised secondary school qualification or equivalent.

Mature applicants without formal qualifications may be considered on the basis of relevant work experience and their ability to meet the demands of the programme.
English Language Requirements
Learners must demonstrate English language proficiency sufficient to successfully engage with programme materials, participate in learning activities, and complete assessments. This may be evidenced through prior education completed in English or through a recognised English language qualification.
For learners whose first language is not English, an IELTS 5.5 (overall) or above is normally accepted for entry to the diploma. Equivalent English language proficiency may include:

Course Units
Develops the written, verbal, and interpersonal skills needed to produce clear business documents, deliver effective presentations, and communicate professionally in the Canadian workplace.
Provides an overview of Canada's social services landscape and the systems that support newcomers as they settle.
Provides an overview of Canada's immigration and refugee programs and the pathways newcomers take to settle in the country.
Explores how to work respectfully and effectively across cultures, identities, and backgrounds in a diverse Canadian society.
Develops the active listening, questioning, and rapport-building skills needed to support newcomer clients effectively and respectfully.
Explores the services that help newcomers integrate—housing, employment, language training, education, and community connection.
Builds the skills to respond supportively to clients in distress and to work in a trauma-informed way with those who have experienced hardship.
Examines the ethical principles, confidentiality, and professional boundaries essential to safe and responsible helping relationships.
